Default 18K service pricing and content

Hi, here we go, im due for an 18000 mile service on my K1200 GT SE , so im asking dealers for quotes - so lets play a game of " whats missing from the service quote " and " spot the differance in quotes ", hold on to your seats folks and off we jolly well go ...... and the first contender is Benham Wolverhampton:

As requested price for 18,000 mile service 125.00 all inclusive
the service price includes the following

Reading for any fault codes using the diagnostic system
oil change with filter
visual inspection of brake pipes, brake hoses and connections
check brake pads and discs
check brake fluid levels, rear brakes
visual inspection of hydraulic clutch system
checking freedom of movement of throttle cable and checking for kinks and chafing
checking coolant level
checking tyre pressures and tread depth
checking ease of movement of side stand
checking lights and signalling equipment
function test engine start suppression
final inspection and check road worthiness
setting service due date and countdown distance
checking battery charge state
( i've got a little sneaky suspision , there may be some ity bity rather important jobs missing from this one, gosh!! can you guess what they might be ??)

and the second contender is.... Motorrad Chester :

Hi Steven,

For an 18k service including Oil and filter, Valve clearances, Rear Wheel Drive oil, Spark Plugs and Brake fluid at wheel circuits is 422.27 including VAT.

I hope this helps, if you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

(Thanks for that detailed quote Motorrad Chester , try not to give me too much info on the price breakdown, after all its only over 400 ya little rascals)

More posts to follow as they come in...god help us all

It's not clear if they will charge you extra if valve clearances have to be adjusted?

Oh, they will, I was told budget for an extra 100 if any need adjusting.

Steve,
I was quoted 380 by Cotswold Motorrad for the 18K service including a brake fluid change, but no FD oil change as mine isnt due until the 24K. My 18K is now due in a few weeks, but my plugs and valve clearances were done the other week when it broke down, so Im only looking at an engine oil and filter now plus the other checks.

Oil price seems to vary wildly, Clarkes are taking the p... with theirs, 67!! Cotswold was 55, Lovetts 63, and Riders 51

18k BMW Service, engine oil and filter, check valve clearances, new spark plugs, brake fluid change front and rear brakes, coolant change, sundries, gaskets, environment charges 375.42 plus VAT (450.50)

The observant will have noticed no mention of an air filter. It's not part of the 18k service and isn't checked. 29.82 inc vat for the filter. Brake pads are checked. They're 64.05 rear, 52.80 front for a pair, total 169.65. Including VAT though, so not too bad. Yes, that is sarcasm. Labour charges extra, but I did these bits myself.

thanks for the feedback gents, been seeking advice from our american associates and advised chances of valve clearance incorrect at 18K is very unlikely and no way will sparkers need replacing - plus i had may FD changed at 12K so that also not needed this time - so to be fair to Beham of Wolverhampton ( who i initially thought were way off the mark ) they are actually on the money so to speak with there quote, if you look at the logic of it, plus use my beemer daily 7/7 and it runs like a dream as well.

I was recently talking to a head mechanic at a BMW dealership and he said he had never had a slant four in that needed valve adjustment.
I was also told by another owner a while back that the plugs being iridium are good for 50k and the coolant should be lifelong as is the final drive oil, that's why its a sealed unit.
Perhaps BMW built these bikes to be low on maintenance and perhaps its the dealers who gave out a general hue & cry ???
Hey what about us ?

Also whilst we are mentioning our American counterparts, there was some discussion a while back as to the service intervals.
Over there it appears to run like this.

6000 Miles is a small service
12000 Miles a large service
18000 Miles a small service
24000 Miles a large service .... And so on

BTW .. A large service at Graham's (an independent in Taunton ) is around 260 ,he also says that the valve clearance is carried out at 24 thousand Miles as is also standard on most Japanese bikes.

Attn of Steve S - you might want to consider BRM (Bath Road Motorcycles) in Bristol, who are an independent. They used to be Bristol BMW Motorrad but surrendered the franchise (now taken on by Dick Lovetts, Bristol) last year, but kept on their BMW trained mechanics and special tooling. Needless to say, prices are much more reasonable than main dealers.

At least it would save you an additional 80 mile round trip if you were to visit them as opposed to Graham's of Taunton.
